Capello hits back at his critics

Capello hits back at his critics Fabio Capello has asked critics to look at themselves in the mirror and ask whether they have been right to attack the Italian.

Capello emerged from the maelstrom to deliver a successful start to England's Euro 2012 qualifying campaign last night.

Yet he knows a four-goal triumph over Bulgaria will not in itself silence the people who feel he should have lost his job in the wake of this summer's World Cup debacle.

The 64-year-old has done some soul-searching himself since South Africa. Now he wants others to do the same.

"When you shave in the morning you have to look in the mirror and ask is what you wrote about this man correct or not," he said.

"I can't change what people write. I understand it has to be done.

"I look at myself and I am sure what I brought was good.

"I try to do my job really well but sometimes I make mistakes."

Capello introduced the word respect into the conversation, implying there were some who had none for a man whose coaching CV is littered with success but now finds himself answering questions about his ability he neither expected nor deserves.

Rooney stays in Swiss squad

Rooney stays in Swiss squad Wayne Rooney will travel to Switzerland for England's Euro 2012 qualifier despite allegations about his private life.

The striker has been the subject of reports in the News of the World and Sunday Mirror leading to speculation about whether he will take part in Tuesday's match.

However, FA sources have indicated to the Press Association that no decision has yet been taken and as it stands, Rooney is expected on the flight.

The Manchester United star is an integral part of England coach Fabio Capello's team, even though it is now 11 matches since he last scored for his country.

He claimed three assists and had a hand in the other goal as England opened their qualification campaign on Friday with an impressive 4-0 win over Bulgaria at Wembley.

England take on fellow World Cup contenders Switzerland in Basle on Tuesday.

Following the withdrawal of Peter Crouch through injury, aside from Rooney, Capello has only three other strikers to call upon.

Defoe grateful to unselfish Rooney

Defoe grateful to unselfish Rooney Jermain Defoe hailed Wayne Rooney after the latter handed him his first England hat-trick on a plate on Friday night.

Defoe stole the headlines as England's European Championship qualifying campaign got off to the perfect start with a 4-0 win over Bulgaria at Wembley.

But the match also witnessed Rooney's rebirth as a force on the international stage, the Manchester United star eventually shaking off the cobwebs to have a hand in all four of England's goals.

Rooney was particularly generous in playing in Defoe for England's third and fourth goals, something which did not go unacknowledged by the Tottenham striker.

"It's always nice when you play with a partner and they want you to score the third goal," Defoe said.

"When I was on the second, he said to me, 'Keep going and you'll get the hat-trick'.

"When I did, he was the first one to come over."

He added of his treble: "It's great - what a feeling.

"It's a fantastic feeling, to score for your country, to score a hat-trick and to win the game."

Despite starting together plenty of times in the past, Defoe and Rooney have never before hit it off in such spectacular fashion.

Acknowledging this, Defoe said: "I've always said sometimes it takes time to get things working.

Del Bosque delights in Torres double

Del Bosque delights in Torres double Spain coach Vicente del Bosque was pleased to see Fernando Torres back on the scoresheet for Spain against Liechtenstein.

Torres, who has struggled with various injury problems this year, had scored only once in the previous 12 months for Spain, which was in the 6-0 friendly win over Poland just prior to this summer's World Cup.

However, just days after scoring his first Liverpool goal since April, the 26-year-old last night produced two clinical finishes to help reigning world and European champions Spain begin their Euro 2012 qualifying campaign in style.

When asked if he was happy to see Torres back on the mark, Del Bosque said: "Of course. He didn't score during the World Cup and these goals plus the one he got the other day for Liverpool are going to improve his moral and self-confidence.

"That's very good for him and the national team. Today (against Liechtenstein) he moved well close to the area."

Torres was replaced soon after scoring his second goal in the 54th minute but Del Bosque felt the Atletico Madrid man, who Liverpool feel is still a month away from full fitness, could have played on.

"I don't think it was too draining a game for the players. Torres could have continued perfectly. We had people on the bench who ought to play, we had to give them the opportunity," Del Bosque added.

"It (the substitutions) was for those we were on the bench than those that were on the pitch."

Fabregas: It's time to forget Barca

Fabregas: It's time to forget Barca Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregas says he wants to focus on his side this season and not think about moving to Barcelona.

Fabregas was at the centre of one of the biggest non-transfer sagas this summer, with La Liga champions Barcelona making multiple bids to lure the Spaniard away from the Emirates.

Despite pleas and at time outrageous statements from Barca authorities and players, Arsenal refused to give in - making sure their talisman stays at least for one more season.

Now Fabregas himself is eager to draw a line under the whole affair.

In comments reported by Sport.es, he said: "Barcelona made every effort to sign me, but Arsenal had told me to stay, which in no way I was going to refuse, and in the end I had to stay."

He refused to comment on speculations in the Spanish media that he will be a Barcelona player for sure next season.

"What happens in the future? We'll see. I do not think of anything because if I think of the future it would not let me focus on the present and I would have a bad year."
