Fiery Wenger defends himself, Arsenal Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has come out fighting after being questioned yet again over his side's failure to win silverware.

Arsenal's team of young guns have been a treat to watch in recent seasons, captivating many with their free-flowing style of football.

However, many feel Wenger has yet to perfect the right blend of youth and experience, illustrated by his side's inability to close out many games from winning positions.

Wenger, though, believes there is no reason why Arsenal should not be winning titles with his present squad, and dismisses claims that he is using their youth as an excuse for the lack of trophies at the Emirates Stadium.

"Nobody is asking them to wait," said Wenger according to The Guardian.

"We can win straight away."

Wenger feels calls for his departure are unfair, as his players are equally responsible for Arsenal's trophy drought, which has not seen them win anything of note since the FA Cup triumph of 2005.

"Why do you think we pay the players?"

"The media talk like the players are not responsible for winning trophies.

"They are as responsible as I am, as the fans are."

High on belief that his present charges are mature enough to challenge for trophies, Wenger is determined to keep the group together, in lieu of constant speculation linking captain Cesc Fabregas with a move to boyhood club Barcelona.

Samir Nasri and Gael Clichy are also out of contract next summer, but Wenger reveals contract extension talks are already in progress.

"We are talking to Nasri and his agent already and we have the same situation with Clichy.

"I am very optimistic."

Despite recent games where they have been unable to hold on to winning positions, Wenger feels his side should be motivated by their performances and believe in themselves.

"If your belief is low, your feeling is very low.

"What we can get from our performances is the belief that we have to quality."

Arsenal's remaining prospect for silverware this season is in the Barclays Premier League, although having slipped to third on the back of Chelsea's revival, Wenger's men will need to get back to winning ways as soon as possible.
